Today while on the road back from Newport I noticed a sign I had never noticed before. It said, "Feeling sad, lonely, depressed, helpless? Call Samaratan Hot Line......"
It took a moment before I realized this sign was placed right before the Pell/Claiborne Bridge.
Creepy.

The bridges going on and off the Cape, the Sagamore Bridge and the Bourne Bridge also have those signs posted. As a child heading to the Cape on vacations I used to spend a good deal of time thinking about how sad that was...so much so that in high school I did a report on it and asked for the statistics on how many callers they receive each year. I don't remember the exact numbers, and it was thirty years ago now-BUT, the clear and sad fact was more than I could even imagine. I was amazed at the thought of how many people are out there feeling that sad, alone and desperate. God Bless them, huh? PT
