Little Bits

Mondays are like Blondes:

Monday can actually fall on Tuesday, or any other day. It is not actually the name of the day that makes it a monday, but monday is a description, an attitude.

By the same token, blonde is not really a color. Not just anyone can be a blonde, even if they have blonde hair. It is a description, an attitude.

We watched CSI while we ate our dinner last night. WHY do we do that?? Seems like what was on our plates, on the way to our mouths, was depicted graphically on the screen in front of me - as applied to murder victims...gross.

Am contemplating having Nikko's vocal cords removed. I know, I know. Thats a very drastic solution to a serious barking problem, but I can't think of a better way. I don't want to use shock, that would totally crush her spirit. Because we are not home during the day, sprays would be ineffective. She is a very vocal dog, perceiving an important purpose to her noise. But it's more than I or the neighbors can bear. And if we move to a multi family as planned, her incessant barking at every coming and going is not going to fly. By removing her vocal cords, she can still talk, but no noise will come out. I think she can learn to accept that. Input?

Related - When an aquaintance mentioned that their old dog was mostly deaf now, it occurred to me that the poor thing might be wondering why the birds stopped singing and why his owner didn't call him to play anymore.

Little chickadees have nested in the eaves above the ceiling of my office. I hear them scratching and being all sorts of busy up there while I attend to my spreadsheets and reports. Soon I will see the parents teaching the babies how to fly as they leave the little hole in the fascia to the outside world. It helps remind me that there is a world that I am not part of, yet is no less valid.

So I'm reading what you wrote floating along with you until SCREACH-you're gonna what?!?! Remove a dog's vocal cords? Now, because I love you and I know that you love me, I'm going to be perhaps a little harsh (don't take anything personal). There just has to be some other solution. That sounds barbaric to me. Would we remove our children's voice boxes because they drive us nuts with all of their whining, complaining, bickering-you get the idea. I almost thought you were joking, but after rereading it, I think you may be serious. Do people actually do that? I mean, it also seems cruel to declaw a cat to me. Ugh- how about the Dog Whisperer? Maybe she has anxiety issues? Let's figure out why she feels the need and then perhaps that can be addressed. Maybe she needs to be with a family that has no neighbors.

I don't know who John Galt is, but I assume you are reading "Atlas Shrugged". Looks good. Found this quote: "I swear by my life and my love of it that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine." --John Galt

H- Thanks. ALWAYS be blunt and truthful with me, PLEASE! I don't have to like it, but not only does your honesty give a true reflection of myself, but also insight into what you're about. That is precious to me, and an important reason why I love you. :)

Let me preface with the fact that Nikko is 11+ years old. Some of her barking is anxiety - its her nature, I know. I've always accepted that, but I am not my neighbors. (I'm sort of afraid they'll poison her...she is really friendly but loudly territorial) I talked to the vet about this, and found that he actually did that to one of his dogs, and he is a GREAT doc. She'll still 'bark', but only she'll hear it, so she won't feel she's lost her purpose.

Wow!

Really?

Alright, schedule the appointment.

I want you to write about why you wrote "Who is John Galt?" after everyone has a chance to read your post. My curiosity is bouncing off the walls right now!

One more thing, is there a danger with Nikko's age to survive such a procedure?

Elf,
Hmm....
On Who is John Galt?
"Since everyone across the country is repeating the phrase, "Who is John Galt?", it is natural that many people have attempted to answer that question. The phrase becomes an expression of helplessness and despair at the current state of the world."

On Dog's vocal cords- I never knew that was a procedure that could occur at what seems to be minimal risk? And-I like that you considered not wanting to "break a spirit". It may be a drastic step as it is a permanent solution to a potentially short term problem? Or does Nikko bark incessantly even when you are there?

I have more responses on the other stuff but my little Sadie has a need and is doing a very great impression of a proactive, assertive, go-getter of an animal/toddler/adolescent. I need to take her O-U-T as N has a terrible cold-and is pretty under the weather with it. More later if that is OK.

Elf,

OK-to finish...love the blonde-Mon.
comparison...a concept v a word. The dog wondering why the birds stopped singing and his owner calling brought tears to my eyes. I think sometimes that a dog has an older soul-spirit connection...so this old dog might very well know that although his world has gone quiet the noises are still there for those who need to hear them...

CSI over dinner would be a little much for me too-but not N...she isn't all that visual unless I compell her to go there-and then she is horrified that I would want to share such a thing. Why? She would wonder...One of the "Mind your own neurosis' things"

One more "got to say" and I am done. The fact that you say "there is a whole world that I am not a part of-yet it is no less valid" (not the best paraphrase) is just amazing Elf. You are just a WAY cool person! How many human beings could step back and have that kind of respect for a tiny chickadee? I shall take the liberty of answering...NOT MANY. My hat's off to you...I so like you...Paige
