We watched "I Like Killing Flies" last night. It is a documentary film focused on Kenny Shopsic who is chef owner of a small restaurant in Greenich Village. I recommend it for those of you who have NetFlicks. But, H, don't watch it with kids around - lots of rich language. And Mel, I'm thinking the shots of the kitchen will make you very uncomfortable.
Kenny Shopsic is a fascinating character, amazingly intellectual, creative and articulate. And I think obnoxious would be appropriate, too. At the beginning, I didn't think I would make it through the whole movie, but it held me in a train wreck sort of way, and I'm glad I was captured. Since it is done documentary style, there is little of the usual movie ingredients that hold our attention - drama, tension, intrigue, action...Kenny has a very bold and earthy perspective on life, society and 'norms'. I'm glad there are people like that. Real, baby.
The next time I am in NYC, I will make it a point to find his restaurant. With luck we won't be thrown out, no parties of 5 allowed...

Paul is getting ready to go to the grocery store. For years I did all the family grocery and other shopping. It is an evil chore. Paul, however, does not mind going. For that I'm eternally grateful. But I suspect that although he doesn't usually mind going, sometimes it is not what he'd druther be doing, but he does anyway. This morning is one of those mornings that I feel like he is doing it because it has to be done, not because he doesn't mind going. He'll never complain, though, cause he just doesn't. He's checked the inventory for holes that need filling, researched some recipes for the week, prepared his list and cup of coffee to go, and is tying his shoes and I'm writing about Kenny Shopsic in my pajamas when I pipe up, "Honey, would you like me to go with you?"
That NEVER comes out of my mouth, confirmed by the confused stare I recieved from him. He answered, "Um, if you want to".
Me: "Thats not what I asked".
Paul: "You don't like to go"
Me: "But if you want me to, I will"
Paul: "Well, I always want you with me, but I'm not sure why you are asking, you hate the grocery store".
Me: "I know, but it is a gesture of love. I appreciate you always doing it, so if you want company today, I'm there"
Paul: "I appreciate that, but, you know? There is no right answer to your question. If I say I want you to go - quick quick, go get dressed - knowing you really don't want to, I'll feel bad and you'll be grumpy. If I say, no I don't want you to go, well, that sounds sort of harsh."
Ha, was just checking to see if he was awake. I'll help unload and put away when he gets back.
Peace
