About five miles from my house is a really cool ice cream stand/farm. This is a beautiful farm, which grows ten acres of sunflowers each year and sells them, proceeds go to the Make a Wish Foundation. It is stunning in July, to drive by these acres and acres of huge sunflowers. This spot is so Norman Rockwell, or Currier & Ives, a quintessential illustration of good, old fashioned values, this farm. In early spring, a herd of some of the most attractive bovines appear on the south forty. They are big and healthy, rich browns, some black. Mostly one color, although a few of them have a white band around the middle which remind me of the Dutch Banded breed. Some of them have white faces. After a few weeks in the south forty, they magically appear across the road. How do they get there? I never see them cross. They stay there for about a month, grazing on the shiny dark green grass until it is time to plant the sunflowers. This year there are lots of darling calves.
Each time I view this as I drive by, my heart sings. So I finally pulled over and took some photos. Nearly got killed by someone speeding up my ass, but it was worth it. There was someone plowing, and a little calf running after...SO CUTE! My big friends probably won't be there anymore this year, since it looks as if the planting is beginning. These photos aren't so good. Paul has a real good camera, and I think I need to confiscate it.

I hope these pictures click to full size - the one above this one is the little calf who was off from the rest of the herd chasing the plow...and note the time, not even 6:30 yet and the plower guy had several runs already plowed up. Can you imagine? In this field, sitting on a plow amongst this gorgeous herd of cows watching the sun rise???? I wouldn't even want to get paid for that job....
Peace and moooooooooooo
