I am requesting IMMEDIATE feedback re the below information, please -
I've been working at this company for four and a half years - outdistancing even the vice president who started with this project. I am the only one who has been here from the beginning, and have fulfilled most duties required with the project, including leading it.
As this side of the company house has grown, so has many of the initial policy and procedures. Including HR.
I've just received a form to be filled out for a background check, including CREDIT REPORT. I had a background check when I was hired. I do not believe the company, at this juncture in my employment, any right to check my CREDIT. If they want to institute this policy for new hires, then so be it. I'd have a choice then whether to submit to that hiring practice or refuse the job.
So what I am looking for from the smartest women in the world, (and Harry) is whether I am being difficult again, or not. How should I proceed?

Again last night - read a whole issue of Reader's Digest, (for want of anything better - yesterday I ordered like 10 books from Amazon) and at midnight was looking at the clock thinking "ruh roh". My eyes didn't want to close. Got up at 5:15, opted for a 'whore's bath' instead of a shower, and made it to work on time, but it will be a long day. Paul is home today, YAY!!!! And I'll be pretty tired tonight, so am hoping that with Paul home and being tired I'll get a good night's rest.

Okay - H got here this morning at 8:25 am. She's wearing red sweat pants and a t-shirt. Looks like something she would wear to bed. I am formulating something to send to manager regarding her being behind with her work. I really don't care what hours she works, just don't want to pick up the slack for the slacker.

Need to know how V did yesterday. I think I heard something on the radio this morning about the race...just what it was for and stuff. Post, baby, post....how'd you do?

When Paul has a minute we are going to talk about backpacking that trail I posted about. We want to set a date - will keep those interested aprised.

I tried tempeh last night. I'll need to practice with some different recipes for that stuff. Just fried it in a pan with soy sauce and a wee bit of oil. Not great.

Okay all, look forward to hearing from you!
Peace

I can see your point. I don't think my credit is anyone's damn business either. Unless I guess if I have access to company credit cards or other funds that could be abused. I then see why a company would be interested in my credit report. However, if you've had access to funds and not abused them for the past 5 years or however long you've worked there. Why would you start now? Unless you are starting to get into personal financial trouble. I suppose that happens and then people start stealing from their company.
I think this is the bottom line: This is not personal. It may be a bit hard for you to see that because of all of the stuff. It's a company policy and those can't be changed or questioned-it is what it is-wrong, I get ya-but it is. If it's something you want to take a stand on, go ahead and voice (diplomatically) your concerns. However, be prepared for fallout over that. They may actually see you as needing to hide something...
I would just submit to the background check and keep looking for that other job that doesn't involve government...
I love you,
The 'real' H
You think H? Even if I had a background check?
Oh, and correction. I have only worked at the company 3 plus years - 4 years the beginning of January.
I don't like but understand credit checks for employment, especially in construction where kickbacks are prevalent. But when I was hired it wasn't a policy, or I might have made a different decision. You really don't think I have a leg to stand on here? I'm beginning to think not also, because the original company was sold and we now belong to a new company. So they might be able to get away with it on those grounds. I know it is not personal. But when do we make a stand??????????????
next generation-no legs for us to stand on...
Disclaimer:
The advice I give comes from the mind of a stay-at-home mom. Not exactly corporate savvy. Maybe I should just go back to my laundry, train tracks, littlest pet shop, and "North to Freedom" novel.........

ELF, Oh my God-you needed immediate advice on the ONE day where I had a mid-morning thing that prevented me from logging on!
Go figure!
Um-it doesn't make any sense to me as far as a credit check. A drug screen yes, NOT a credit check. I say "nope" if you care that they know your numbers all that much-OR-if you have had a lot of checks recently-then nope again as too many checks make lenders wary. How is that for nothing definitive?
Crap-had a big thought, then lost it after I hit enter to skip for more space...if it comes I shall post it. These days there is an abyss with my best thoughts floating away from my speech areas just in time for me to miss catching them. Dang that...
Good Luck with this-you also may want to take a real bath with Paul coming and all...sorry X...people over forty still have sex. I know the concept is hard. Elf-X doesn't even want to hear about us kissing.
I told her your body will fall apart around you-but sex will get better.
Paige
you're right - for work, a whore's bath. for paul, a long and thorough shower...lol.
thanks for commenting. i didn't mean immediately, but as soon as you were able. i'm simply outraged and adrenelyn is working.
i've since reread the body of the email with the request. the attached authorization is for those of us who drive in the interest of doing our jobs, whether company vehicle or personal. the message said that the authorization had to be signed to do a DMV check. but it is an authorization that enables a lot more than that, including credit checks. so i've decided to get my own DMV records and provide to company, although i believe that was done when i was hired, but i'll do it anyway. hopefully that will eliminate my ethical dilemma regarding the company's demands for what i believe is personal information and not relevent to my position.
Oh, and PT, thank you so much.
it's stupid, but jobs do check credit now. I'm sorry. My place tried to do this weird check on me when I was driving clients around. I sharpied out everything except my driver's license state and number. One back ground check at hire is sufficient. I'm indifferent to a credit check. If you're credit is bad, will they fire you??
