On My Drive Home

While talking to H on the phone, driving along on my way home, (and, by the way, I started calling her, but put the phone down until I got past the traffic lights - I'm driving the Subaru, which is a standard shift and it is really tricky using one hand to hold the phone, another to shift, and another to steer - so my phone rings and guess who it is.) *smile*.

So while talking, I am going by some very pretty trees on Pachaug Pond. I took some pics for H so he could see.

H - I don't know if you know or not, but birches turn yellow, maples scarlet, and oaks usually just turn brown, but they can sometimes be scarlet or orange.

Hope there is one in here you like, H.

Peace

Okay, now I'm teary.

I had a crappy day...poop, fighting kids, 90 degrees, etc. The usual.

I sat down here after a sweating bike ride to do something-anything for I'm feeling glum this afternoon. I read a few news bites and then decided to check blogs-knowing full well that you hadn't written anything and there it was...

The pictures are gorgeous! I feel so many different things looking at them. Thank you for the gift. I thought you were taking a picture of one tree while we were on the phone-not whole vistas!

I like them all, but the one with a piece of the road in the foreground makes me feel like I'm there. Like I'm on the drive too or something. I also like the one with a really green field (wheat?) contrasting with the foliage and a smidge of fencing in the front. It lets me imagine that I'm looking at my own farmland. I like the one looking through tall grasses-cool perspective. And the water???? It's so calm and the reflections aren't distorted at all!

Thanks for sharing this beauty with me and risking your neck while doing it! You just boosted me a bit and of course, made me long to move there...........
Love,
H.

Oh! ha ha, I was all being emotional and forgot about one of my favorite things-SCIENCE!

I did and didn't know that about the specific colors for different species. Just based on personal observations. I had posed that question that we talked about to Ethan a few weeks back and negotiated a $2.50 payment for a well-researched answer. He started telling me about chlorophyll right off the bat and I learned that he actually thought ALL trees turned red, then orange, then yellow, and finally brown. Anyways, he never did research it. I think I'll show these pictures to him and see if it will spark his interest.

What color do our Copper Beech trees in Newport turn?

V, the cider and fall foliage tour sounds like good fun. doesn't it take your breath away? especially when the sun is low and hits those trees just right? like they are on fire?

H, glad you like. cool that E learned about the chlorophyll. I dont know what our copper beech tree turns, but since it has a dark red leaf anyway, i'm betting that depending on conditions, it may go to brighter red or just brown. i'll check, but don't know if i will make it in time since i won't be going to newport next week. my cherry blossom tree leaves turn a wonderful brilliant red, and so does my canadian maple. i'm wondering about the cork elm, in maine. bet it turns yellow. sometimes the maples will turn orangy before turning full red, so E is not entirely wrong. and the richness of the colors depends on conditions; rain vs. drought, cold vs. warm, etc. this year is looking pretty good, with lots of rain and warmish weather. but not ninety degrees, thank goodness.
